UK Telemarketing Guide

Telemarketing is marketing which is carried out over the telephone to either home or business telephone numbers.

The purpose of telemarketing is to make a sale. Often, telemarketers have personal information on the customer when they call, thus knowing the person has for example purchased similar or related products to theirs from other outlets or vendors.

Most telemarketing calls are also known as "cold calls," meaning the recipient of the call has not requested that the telemarketer contact them.

Telemarketing is suggested to be one of the most controversial types of marketing. One common type of automated telemarketing program would dial numbers to check for answering machines in order to leave a pre-recorded sales pitch. If a person answered, the program detected a real voice and hung up. It is now illegal for a telemarketer to leave an automated sales pitch on an answering machine.

Some older practices of telemarketing inadvertently caused controversy. Many people were confused and worried by the unexplained hang-ups. If your home telephone gets excessive hang-ups, telemarketers may be the reason. Some organizations claiming it amounts to harassment are fighting to make this practice illegal.
