Scotland's labour market 'remains strong'
25/04/2007

Labour market conditions in Scotland remain positive, according to the latest Bank of Scotland labour market report.

Permanent and temporary employment growth is currently accelerating, the bank's review suggests.

Furthermore, the bank indicates that there is a strong demand for staff, which is reflected by increases in wages and salaries.

Overall, the report's labour market barometer did not change from February's 60.3, which suggests that job market conditions in the country are "firm".

Tim Crawford, group economist at Bank of Scotland, commented on the results, saying: "March's survey shows that employment growth in Scotland has firmed."

"However, wages and salaries continue to rise as companies compete for qualified staff. Skill shortages are also more of an issue than in other parts of the UK."

The survey states that demand was strongest for permanent nursing, medical and care staff, as well as temporary engineering and construction workers.

Dundee recorded the strongest rise in permanent staff placements, while Aberdeen witnessed the largest increase in temporary staff opportunities.
