City insiders are eyeing the next move of out-going Punch Taverns boss, Giles Thorley, after news emerged he set up a new company by the name of Anthrop Capital.
The famed financial engineer announced he was leaving the pub chain in March – two months after he registered Anthrop with Companies House in January.
He is know to have been planning his departure since September last year, when he first approached Peter Cawdron, Punch's chairman, about it.
With Thorley's reputation for canny deal-making, many city insiders predict this will not be the last they hear of Anthrop, which has Thorley registered as its only director.
The 42-year-old was nonchalant about the formation, however, insisting that it was just because he "liked the name" – which is drawn from anthropos the Greek word for human.
Since he revealed he was leaving Punch, Thorley has speculated on the options available to him, revealing he has looked at some 'left-field' ideas.
These include the option to "do my own thing", with Anthrop as the primary vehicle, but he has yet to make a firm decision.
His successor at Punch is still being sought, with a decision expected next month. Internal and external candidates are being considered, with thenanted pubs division head, Roger Whiteside, and managed pubs boss, Mike Tye, believe to be the internal front-runners.
