UK Building Maintenance Guide

Blocked drains, burst pipes, damp and structural damage can cause serious disruption to your business, but these are just a few of the problems you can look forward to if you overlook the importance of building maintenance.

Minor problems can escalate quickly if left unchecked, but with simple programme of regular building maintenance, you can prevent disasters before they happen.

Consider investing in facilities management software for your business, or at the very least keep a detailed log of all building maintenance carried out, so that nothing goes un-noticed by either you or a visiting professional.

Your regular building maintenance checks should include the roof (including any loft space), walls, gutters and rainwater pipes, underground drainage, external joinery and plants growing on or near the building walls. Inside the building, you need to maintain chimney flues, periodically check smoke alarms, electricity and gas supplies, wiring and pipe lagging, and be alert for signs of damp and decay.

Never undertake any dangerous building maintenance unless you are qualified. This includes any electricity or gas maintenance, structural work or roof maintenance where access is difficult.

Always hire a professional unless you have the necessary knowledge and expertise as incorrect building maintenance or the use of the wrong materials can and will often cause further problems and complications.
