Asda Drops Petrol Prices
30/07/2008

There's good news for people with an Asda forecourt in their local area: the supermarket has announced petrol price cuts of up to 3 per cent across its 171 petrol station forecourts.

This is the second time Asda has announced petrol price cuts: last week the supermarket reduced its fuel prices by 3p. A litre of unleaded petrol from Asda currently costs 113.9p, and a litre of diesel costs 128.9p. As of tomorrow those prices will fall even further.

Asda (which is owned by America's Wal Mart) is competing against other supermarkets, who have also reduced their petrol prices recently. There has been a steep fall in the global price of crude oil, which has triggered the price war.

Last week, Sainsbury's cut petrol prices by 5p a litre for customers who spend £50 or more in-store. Tesco is running a similar promotion. Morrisons has introduced a 4p cut to its forecourt prices.

Asda accompanied today's announcement with a call for other retailers to adopt national prices for fuel, because fuel prices tend to be higher in local areas where there are few competitors.

David Miles, trading director of Asda said: "The latest price cut is a further example of our commitment to make motoring more affordable for Britain's drivers. Hopefully, this time our competitors will follow suit rather than charging locally high prices. With costs falling, now is a perfect time to show fair prices to all your customers by taking higher prices off the pump."
